AlreadyLoved

For dads · Ages 3–6

Help your child know God for themselves.

You can’t make them believe. But you can tell them who God is and who they are to Him. Make them a book that says it, in your voice.

A father and his daughter reading their AlreadyLoved book together at bedtime

You want them to know God for themselves, but...

We’ve asked that same question for our own children.

No book can promise that. But you can tell them who He is, and what He says about them.

Before they were born, He knew them. They’re already loved.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…”

That’s how every AlreadyLoved book begins, and how it ends.

A seed went in today.

The game ends. They played fine. Not great, fine.

“Coach didn’t even look at me.”

You tell them they played hard. You mean it. They nod and look out the window.

Halfway home, so quietly you almost miss it:

“I’m not good enough.”

That’s a seed. It went in today. It didn’t ask your permission.

A scoreboard. A screen. A bigger kid at the park. A birthday party they weren’t invited to. Some seeds are lies dressed up as facts: you’re only somebody when you win.

A father sits with his arm around his young son on a bench beside an empty soccer field at dusk, the boy quiet in his muddy red jersey

Before they ever prove a thing, tell them who they are.

When Jesus was baptized, a dove came down and the Father spoke:

“This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”

Before Jesus had done a single miracle, He heard who He was. There’s a dove hidden on every page of your child’s book, a sign that God is with them. One day they’ll hear this story and recognize that bird.

Identity first. Nothing earned, nothing proved.

A child learns who they are from their father first. This book helps you be intentional about it, the way God the Father was with Jesus.

Jesus never had to earn His Father’s love. Neither does your child.

“Dad… is that me?”

For the dad who isn’t sure what to say.

It’s a book. You open it and read. The words are already there: the ones you’d want to say if you had them ready, rooted in Scripture and written about your child.

By the third night you won’t be reading them so much as saying them.

A father reads a picture book aloud to his young son, who leans against his chest in bed under a warm lamp

Every third page, you ask and they answer. You won’t need to be a big talker. They’ll do the shouting.

Who are you?
I am already loved.
Who said that?
God said that!
What can change that?
Nothing!

At the very end, you say the last one together: Who can change that? Nobody! When will that change? Never, ever, ever!

Children remember words better when they say them out loud. Icht & Mama, Journal of Child Language, 2015

“Dad, can you read my book again?”

The spine has gone soft. The corner of page four is bent from being found so many times.

The tenth time. The thirtieth. You could say the words with your eyes closed. So could they.

A father laughs as his small daughter points at a page of a well-worn book on his lap

The same truth, heard again and again, until it holds.

You have a thousand bedtimes to do this.

That’s about how many there are between their third birthday and their sixth. Not a countdown. An opening.

You won’t get all of them. Work, travel, the nights you’re wiped. You don’t need all of them. You need enough of them.

The voice they’ll listen for their whole life: let it say what the Father says.

“…talk of them when you sit in your house… and when you lie down…”

Questions dads ask

A father rests his hand on his sleepy daughter’s head as he tucks her in at night

No one knows what their future holds. But you can be faithful with this season.

Say it first. Plant the Father’s words before a scoreboard plants another story.

Our son Jaden spent about nine years away from church.

Jaden knew Jesus had always loved him.

That’s why we made AlreadyLoved.
